The Information Systems Study Program at Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) held a guest lecture and industry practitioner sharing session for the Data Center Management course (SI2514032) on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Held at the JTEIB Student Activity Unit Room B203, 2nd Floor, ITK Campus, the event featured the topic “MEP in Data Center Design and Management”, with the Director of Engineering and Operations of PT Sari Mertha Luwih, Ir. I Nengah Suweden, M.T., serving as the main speaker. The session was conducted in person and was open to the entire ITK academic community, providing participants with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of physical data center facility engineering directly from an industry practitioner.
The event officially began at 10:30 a.m. Central Indonesia Time (WITA), starting with the singing of Indonesia Raya and the ITK Mars, followed by institutional remarks from representatives of the leadership of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Informatics, and Business (JTEIB) and the Coordinator of the Information Systems Study Program at ITK. In his opening remarks, Ir. I Putu Deny Arthawan Sugih Prabowo, S.Kom., M.Eng., a lecturer in the Information Systems Study Program who served as the moderator, emphasized the importance of students developing a comprehensive understanding of information technology infrastructure architecture. This is particularly relevant given the ongoing digital transformation in East Kalimantan and the accelerated development of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN), which require high-performance, reliable, and resilient data center facilities capable of withstanding operational disruptions.
During the main session, Ir. I Nengah Suweden, M.T. explained that the operational reliability of a data center depends not only on server and network equipment but also significantly on the integrity of its Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and IT (MEP/MEPIT) systems. He discussed critical supporting facility components, including uninterrupted backup power supplied through Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems and generators, precision environmental control using Precision Air Conditioning (PAC), clean-agent fire suppression systems, and physical perimeter security systems. These components were discussed with reference to the international ANSI/TIA-942 standard and the Indonesian national standard SNI 8799 to meet redundancy requirements ranging from Tier/Rated-1 to Tier/Rated-4.
The topics presented were directly aligned with the Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) of the Data Center Management course, particularly in equipping students with the knowledge and skills to develop a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) based on real-world case studies. In addition, the session reinforced the IT Governance Engineer graduate profile outlined in the 2025–2030 Curriculum of the Information Systems Study Program at ITK. This profile emphasizes graduates’ competencies in evaluating operational risks, managing IT infrastructure governance, ensuring physical and logical security, and aligning systems with governance standards such as COBIT 2019, ITIL, ISO 31000, and ISO 27001.
The two-hour session was conducted interactively, with students actively engaging in discussions on various field engineering challenges, including power capacity estimation (capacity planning), cooling system efficiency in tropical climates, and disaster recovery strategies for commercial data centers. The event concluded with the presentation of an appreciation plaque to the speaker, followed by a group photo with all participants at the JTEIB Student Activity Unit Room B203, ITK Campus.
Through this activity, the Information Systems Study Program at ITK and PT Sari Mertha Luwih laid the foundation for a sustainable partnership in support of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. Moving forward, the collaboration is expected to expand into joint applied research, industry-driven final projects addressing real-world industry challenges, as well as professional training and competency certification preparation. These initiatives are aimed at supporting the development of highly competitive ITK graduates equipped with relevant industry competencies.
