Title: “Improving the Knowledge of Children at the Satrio Yuliarti Nawawi LKSA Orphanage Regarding Technology, Software, and Hardware”

Year of Community Service: 2025

Benefits:

  1. Empowerment Through Digital Literacy: Providing crucial digital literacy education and empowering social support for children in orphanages.
  2. Character Building & Solidarity: Honing the social sensitivity and character values of SPECTA students, while strengthening internal solidarity among students.
  3. Strengthening Campus-Community Synergy: Strengthening the bridge between ITK and the community, affirming the campus' reputation for not only academic excellence but also humanism.
  4. As a manifestation of the implementation of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education), this activity provides an effective solution through digital literacy to empower orphanage children, while fostering social awareness among students.

Description:

The Kalimantan Institute of Technology is a technology-based campus committed to implementing the Tri Dharma of higher education, which includes Education, Research, and Community Service. Through these three pillars, the campus strives to produce graduates who are not only academically excellent but also capable of making a real contribution to society. Community service activities are one form of implementing the Tri Dharma, which aims to apply students' scientific knowledge and skills to help solve problems in the surrounding environment.

In a socialization activity entitled INFUSION with the theme “Inspiring Growth through Knowledge and Kindness, United in Warmth and Togetherness,” students played a major role in providing various educational activities designed to support children's academic and character development. The entire series of activities was held on November 22, 2025, at the LKSA Satrio Orphanage, Jl. Jenderal Sudirman No.RT.35, Damai, Kec. Balikpapan Kota, Kota Balikpapan, East Kalimantan 76114.

The outreach conducted during this activity focused on educating children in orphanages by providing topics on basic technology. This was done in consideration of their need for basic literacy and character building. This focus was chosen because children in orphanages generally have limited access to tutoring. Through this outreach, students sought to provide relevant and easy-to-understand education to support the academic development and motivation of children in orphanages in the learning process.

Orphanage children certainly have diverse backgrounds and levels of understanding, and it is these conditions that lead to a lack of consistent learning support. The impact of this socialization is seen in basic literacy and confidence in facing learning materials at school through interactive learning activities. Therefore, the focus of this activity is directed at improving the literacy and motivation of children so that they can use technology positively in their daily lives.

It can be concluded that this community service activity went well and was in line with the needs of the children at the orphanage. Initial observations showed that they needed basic literacy, an understanding of technology, and learning assistance. During the activity, the children showed enthusiasm and positive development. Teaching and socializing basic technology helped them understand the material more easily. The impact was seen in their increased motivation to learn and their sense of confidence. The children also began to be able to overcome simple technological problems as long-term preparation.

The partner community in this community service activity is the Satrio Yuliarti Nawawi Child Social Welfare Institution (LKSA), located at Jl. Jenderal Sudirman No. RT.35, Damai, Balikpapan Kota District, Balikpapan City, East Kalimantan 76114. This LKSA is not a residential orphanage, but rather a place for the guidance and development of orphaned and abandoned children. The children come to the center when there are educational activities, guidance sessions, or religious activities. The facilities available include a hall as the main activity space and restroom facilities, while technological facilities such as computers, laptops, or projectors are not available. This situation is an important reason why service activities themed around basic technology introduction are relevant, as the children have never received specific material related to technology and do not have the means to learn directly. The number of children under the center's care reaches 28, predominantly elementary school-aged children, so the method of delivering the material needs to be interactive to suit their character.

Based on field observations, several aspects can be seen at LKSA. From an economic perspective, the children come from lower-middle-class families, so that assistance such as basic food supplies, operational funds, and decent clothing are priorities conveyed by the management. From a social perspective, the orphanage provides guidance through religious activities such as recitation of the Koran, which aims to shape positive character and habits. From a digital and educational perspective, the total lack of technological devices means that the orphanage does not have the means to introduce children to the concepts of hardware, software, or good technology usage ethics. This reinforces the relevance of conducting community service activities in the form of basic technology education, device demonstrations, and providing examples of technological outputs. The support from the management was very positive, even though the implementation was delayed due to rain because the access road to the location was quite small. Overall, the activity went well and received positive responses from both the children and the orphanage administrators.
