Alumni Talk Series #6: A Closer Look at the IT Governance Engineer Profession

The Information Systems Study Program once again held its Alumni Talk Series, a recurring guest lecture initiative that brings experienced alumni to share real-world insights from the industry. In this sixth installment, the event featured the theme "IT Governance and the People Behind the System", held online via Zoom Meeting on Friday, June 5, 2026. The session was led by Hendy Maulana Jaya Saputra, S.Kom., an alumnus of the Information Systems Study Program who now serves as Lead Associate IT Audit/Consultant at PT Vintus Integrasi Bisnis, Jakarta. With over four years of professional experience and a track record of handling more than 40 IT governance and audit projects across more than 30 national and multinational companies, Hendy brought a grounded and practical perspective from the field.

The event was motivated by the need to deepen students' understanding of one of the graduate profiles defined in the Information Systems Study Program Curriculum 2025-2030, namely the IT Governance Engineer: a graduate capable of assessing risks and ensuring that information system security and operations meet organizational needs and policies. In practice, students' grasp of IT Governance has often been confined to the classroom. Frameworks such as COBIT, ITIL, ISO 38500, and risk management can feel abstract without real-world examples to anchor them. Through the Alumni Talk Series, the study program aims to bridge this gap by bringing in alumni who once walked the same academic path and have since built successful careers in the industry.

During his session, Hendy covered a wide range of topics relevant to students, from the meaning of IT governance as a professional practice, to real findings encountered in the field, including structural vulnerabilities within organizations, the effectiveness of incident response, and security gaps identified during actual audit projects. He also discussed the growing dependency of industries on IT, the competencies practitioners need to develop, both technical skills and soft skills, as well as the wide range of career opportunities available in this field. One of the key messages he delivered was that "good technology is not just about sophistication, but about being manageable, secure, and trustworthy."

The discussion forum ran smoothly and was highly interactive, attended by Information Systems students who were actively engaged throughout the session. Through this event, it is hoped that students will gain a comprehensive picture of careers in IT Governance, find motivation through the success of their senior peers, and begin preparing themselves with the relevant competencies and professional certifications needed to compete in the industry upon graduation.
